Job Description

The Head Nurse directs, supervises, and coordinates all nursing staff, functions, and activities across nursing care areas. The role provides leadership, planning, and evaluation of nursing activities to ensure quality patient care. The Head Nurse also serves as a liaison between management and nursing staff.

Key Responsibilities & Tasks

  • Oversee nursing staff, including nurse managers, registered nurses, and support staff, ensuring high standards of patient care.
  • Assign and manage staff schedules to maintain appropriate nurse-patient ratios and workload distribution.
  • Act as a role model and mentor, providing guidance, support, and professional development.
  • Organize regular meetings for nursing staff.
  • Develop and manage nursing duty rotas for various sections.
  • Ensure safe, compassionate, evidence-based nursing care according to established protocols.
  • Collaborate with physicians, pharmacists, and the multidisciplinary team to develop individualized care plans.
  • Supervise administration of medicines, blood products, and other critical therapies.
  • Communicate effectively and empathetically with patients, families, and caregivers regarding treatment and progress.
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and care delivery.
  • Work with the Monitoring & Evaluation Manager to track key performance indicators and improve nursing practices.
  • Ensure completeness and accuracy of nursing records and reports.
  • Identify staff educational needs and organize training programs to enhance clinical skills.
  • Promote continuing education and certification opportunities.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback.
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning and evidence-based practice.
  • Manage nursing resources, inventory, medical supplies, and equipment.
  • Assist in budget development and ensure cost-effective care without compromising quality.
  • Supervise non-professional staff for cleanliness, orderliness, and patient transportation.
  • Lead nursing staff in emergencies, ensuring timely interventions and communication.
  • Ensure nurses are trained to handle high-acuity patients, including ICU, NICU, HDU, or emergency cases.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by management.

Requirements, Qualifications and Competences

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) required; Master’s in Nursing (MSN) or Healthcare Administration preferred.
  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Minimum 5 years of nursing experience, including 3 years in a leadership or management role.
  • Proven leadership and mentorship skills.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Significant clinical experience in ICU, NICU, HDU, or emergency care.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and stand for extended periods.
  • Exposure to infectious diseases and high-risk patient care requiring strict safety adherence.
  • Professionalism, flexibility, and adaptability to changing clinical environments.
  • Commitment to patient-centered care.
