About East African Carbon Company

East African Carbon Company (EACC) is a public-private catalyst, working in alignment with Uganda’s national climate agenda to establish a high-integrity, community-driven carbon market. Through partnerships with the Government of Uganda, EACC supports climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and rural economic development. Our work transforms Uganda’s natural landscapes—forests, wetlands, and degraded lands—into engines of prosperity and sustainability.

Job Description

Earths Work LLC is seeking a Remote Sensing & GIS Specialist to lead geospatial analysis and monitoring for large-scale nature-based carbon projects (REDD+, reforestation, agroforestry) in Uganda. This role is pivotal in leveraging satellite imagery, drone data, and machine learning to track carbon stocks, deforestation trends, and project impacts. You will collaborate with forestry experts, carbon methodology teams, and local partners to ensure high-precision spatial data aligns with Verra VCS, Gold Standard, and MRV requirements.

Why Join Us?

As the exclusive implementer of East Africa Carbon Credit SMC’s (EACC) agreement with the Government of Uganda, Earths Work LLC is at the forefront of sustainable land management and carbon project development. You will:

  • Create socioeconomic opportunities through high-impact projects.
  • Work with a global team of experts.
  • Access to competitive compensation and benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Process and analyze satellite imagery to assess land-use changes and carbon stocks.

  • Develop project baselines and carbon stock change models using IPCC-compliant methods.

  • Create high-resolution land-cover/land-use maps to support assessments.

  • Design and implement GIS-based monitoring systems for project validation and verification.

  • Integrate field data (forest inventories, ground-truthing) with remote sensing outputs.

  • Automate analysis pipelines using Python, R, or Google Earth Engine for efficient reporting.

  • Pilot drone-based surveys and AI/ML tools to enhance carbon stock estimations.

  • Stay updated on emerging remote sensing technologies (e.g., hyperspectral imaging, SAR).

  • Train field teams on mobile data collection tools (ODK, KoBoToolbox).

  • Support forestry and ecology specialists in spatial data interpretation.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in remote sensing and GIS for environmental projects, preferably in forest carbon or conservation.

  • Advanced proficiency in GIS software: ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, ENVI.

  • Skilled with remote sensing platforms: Google Earth Engine, Sentinel Hub.

  • Programming experience in Python (geopandas, rasterio), R, or JavaScript for GEE.

  • Experience with carbon project MRV frameworks (VCS, Gold Standard) is a plus.

  • Master’s or PhD in Geography, Environmental Science, Geomatics, or related fields.

  • Certifications in remote sensing (e.g., ESRI, ASPRS) or carbon mapping are advantageous.

  • Portfolio examples: sample maps, GitHub repositories, or project reports.

  • Ensures precision in spatial data analysis and modeling.

  • Adapts new technologies to overcome data gaps.

  • Bridges technical and non-technical teams effectively.

  • Maintains meticulous documentation for audits.

  • Motivated by climate action and sustainable development goals.
