Job Description

We are looking for a hands-on Server Administrator / Server Engineer to join our Technical Support team in Kampala. In this role, you will be responsible for installing, configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting enterprise server and storage environments for mission-critical customer operations. You will work with leading technologies, including HPE, Dell, VMware, Windows Server, and backup/DR platforms, supporting customers across banking, telecom, government, and other enterprise sectors. The role involves both remote and on-site support within datacenter environments.

Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, and support enterprise servers: Deploy and maintain HPE ProLiant, Blade, DL/ML/SL and Dell PowerEdge servers for customer environments.

  • Administer storage and backup systems: Implement and manage HPE MSA, SAN/NAS storage, and backup appliances such as StoreOnce, including firmware upgrades, patching, and system hardening.

  • Manage operating systems and directory services: Deploy, upgrade, and troubleshoot Windows Server (2012/2016/2019/2022), including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, GPOs, and domain migrations; provide basic to intermediate support for Linux (SUSE/RedHat).

  • Support virtualization platforms: Install, configure, and administer VMware ESXi, vCenter, and Hyper-V; handle VM deployment, clustering, high availability, and resource optimization.

  • Assist with cloud and collaboration platforms: Support Microsoft Exchange (2010–2019) deployments and migrations, and assist with Office 365 onboarding and configuration.

  • Deliver enterprise customer support: Provide onsite and remote support to enterprise customers under warranty and AMC, including datacenter migrations, new system deployments, and preventive maintenance.

  • Troubleshoot infrastructure issues: Diagnose and resolve server hardware faults, RAID and storage issues, network interface problems, UPS integrations, and rack installations.

  • Enhance security and resilience: Support antivirus/endpoint solutions (e.g., Kaspersky, McAfee Enterprise or equivalent), and implement best practices for server hardening, backup, and disaster recovery.

  • Maintain documentation and reporting: Keep detailed records of deployments, configurations, service calls, incident reports, root cause analyses, and preventive maintenance activities.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or an equivalent discipline.

  • Experience: 3–8 years of hands-on experience in server administration, infrastructure support, or datacenter operations, preferably supporting enterprise customers (banks, telecoms, government institutions, etc.).

  • Server & storage expertise: Strong hands-on experience with HPE and Dell server hardware, HPE MSA, storage provisioning, RAID, and disk configurations.

  • Virtualization skills: Solid understanding and practical experience with VMware ESXi, vCenter, Hyper-V, and virtualization concepts (VM deployment, clustering, HA, resource optimization).

  • OS & directory services: Proven experience with Windows Server installation, configuration, troubleshooting, upgrades, and administration of Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and user/group management; Linux exposure is an added advantage.

  • Datacenter familiarity: Knowledge of datacenter environments including racks, cabling, UPS, and power systems, with readiness to perform deployments across multiple sites (travel required).

  • Security & backup: Understanding of server hardening practices, backup/restore concepts, and disaster recovery procedures, including enterprise antivirus solutions.

  • Certifications (added advantage): HPE ASE/ATP (Hybrid IT, Hybrid Cloud, Server Solutions), Dell EMC server certifications, VMware certifications, and Microsoft Windows Server/MCSA.

  • Soft skills: Strong customer-facing communication, ability to work under pressure in mission-critical environments, good teamwork and coordination, excellent problem-solving skills, and willingness to learn and upskill continuously.
