Job Description

Provide strategic leadership, guidance, and overall coordination of the Claims Department to ensure services are delivered effectively and efficiently to beneficiaries.

Key Responsibilities & Tasks

  • Coordinate the formulation of work plans, budgets, and strategies for Claims services.
  • Develop and maintain systems, procedures, and standards for effective delivery.
  • Oversee provision of facilities and resources for Claims services.
  • Determine performance targets for the Manager Claims.
  • Determine appropriate staffing structure with HR and GM Technical; seek top management/board approval.
  • Provide strategic guidance and support to Manager Claims.
  • Assess support needs for staff and liaise with relevant departments.
  • Conduct periodic appraisals of Manager Claims; take follow-up actions.
  • Identify capacity development needs and coordinate with HR.
  • Conduct monthly departmental staff meetings.
  • Ensure support in risk assessment and management to minimize company exposure.
  • Enforce adherence to systems, procedures, and standards.
  • Implement improvements in claims services.
  • Maintain productive relationships with regulators, financial institutions, and government agencies.
  • Authorize departmental payments according to company policies.
  • Monitor departmental activities and implement corrective actions.
  • Monitor resource utilization and address issues as needed.
  • Suggest ideas for growth and service improvement to management.
  • Attend divisional and top management meetings; present reports.
  • Represent Technical Operations Division in delegated forums.
  • Prepare periodic departmental reports to assist strategic decisions.

Requirements, Qualifications and Competences

  • Professional Qualification from a Chartered Insurance Institute (Diploma CII or equivalent)
  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Social Sciences, or Arts
  • IRA Certification
  • Minimum 10 years progressive experience in Underwriting, Claims, or Reinsurance
  • At least 5 years in a management role
  • Insurance industry principles, theory, and practice
  • Strategic management and policy formulation
  • Finance and risk management
  • Negotiation and investigation skills
  • Computer proficiency
  • Communication, listening, and report writing skills
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Interpersonal and people management skills
