Job Description

To lead the planning, implementation, monitoring, and reporting of the agricultural value chain, VSLA, youth training, and psychosocial wellbeing interventions under the AGILE project in Kyegegwa District. The role ensures coordination across thematic areas, alignment with sustainability goals, and adequate support for beneficiaries (farmers, youth, women, and refugees).

ABOUT THE PROJECT

With funding from War Child Alliance, AWYAD will implement the AGILE – Agriculture Growth and Innovation for Livelihood Enhancement project, designed to strengthen the roles of young people, women, and refugees in driving inclusive and sustainable economic growth in Uganda.

The project will be implemented in a refugee response context, specifically targeting women and youth from refugee and vulnerable host communities in Kyegegwa District (South-Western Uganda).

The AGILE project will provide technical support to young people and women engaged in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), equipping them with relevant skills to meet labor market demands.

 Through this initiative:

  • 3,060 jobs will be unlocked, with 60% (1,836 jobs) transitioning into decent employment opportunities in the horticulture and coffee value chains.
  • 931 jobs will be created in horticulture.
  • 905 jobs will be developed in the coffee value chain.

Responsibilities

  • Lead project planning and implementation: develop work plans, budgets, schedules; coordinate project components (nursery beds, farmer cooperatives, youth training, VSLA, MHPSS).

  • Coordinate beneficiary mobilization in Kyegegwa: liaise with local leaders, community structures, women- and youth-led producer groups, and refugees.

  • Ensure linkages and partnerships: facilitate VSLA formation and linkages; forge partnerships with cooperatives, business associations, input suppliers, and other relevant actors.

  • Oversee sustainability strategies: ensure cooperatives formed under the project are registered/adopted into the Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU), participate in business missions and summits, and continue accessing services beyond the project cycle.

  • Manage human resources: supervise project assistants, field officers, and volunteers; ensure team capacity is built and roles are clear.

  • Monitor implementation: oversee establishment of 100 nursery beds, job creation, and training activities, ensuring delivery on time and to quality standards.

  • Ensure integration and coordination across components: agronomic training, business skills, VSLA, child protection, and MHPSS.

  • Reporting and accountability: prepare periodic progress reports (monthly, quarterly, annual), track performance indicators, and document lessons learned.

  • Risk management and quality assurance: identify risks (child protection, psychosocial issues, environmental concerns), and ensure quality standards are met.

  • Budget oversight: manage project finances, ensure expenditures align with budget, and coordinate with finance on cash flows.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Project Management, or related field.

  • 5–7 years of experience managing similar multi-component development projects (agriculture, livelihoods, MHPSS, community development).

  • Strong leadership and teamwork skills; excellent written and verbal communication.

  • Experience working with VSLA, cooperatives, farmer groups, and youth training.

  • Understanding of child protection, gender, and psychosocial support issues.

  • Strong reporting, monitoring, and evaluation skills.
