About Peace Corps

In 60 countries, Peace Corps Volunteers are putting their purpose, passion, and skills to work in partnership with welcoming host communities. Learn more about who we are, how we came to be, and what we’re working toward. Our history is based on a shared vision of working with, living alongside, and celebrating cultures around the world. The Peace Corps continues in its bold mission by collaborating with host communities on locally prioritized projects. That vision, along with our mission and goals, drives the Peace Corps and its Volunteers in building relationships, exchanging culture and knowledge, and helping transform lives for generations. Our impact is measured in many ways: a shared cup of tea with a host mother that leads to a greater understanding of Americans; a new school library built; a young boy prepared to serve his own community; a young girl who sees herself as just as capable as her male classmates; a Volunteer who returns home with intercultural competence, enhanced career skills, and a lifelong passion for service. The Peace Corps network is diverse, global, and forward-focused. It includes host country nationals, Volunteers, worldwide staff, partners, educators, friends and family groups, and associations. Together, we support, embrace, and inspire a common desire to make a positive change.

Job Description

If you’re ready to support individuals with big ideas for small-scale businesses, Uganda has an exciting opportunity for you.

Uganda has one of the youngest populations in the world, with more than 78% of the population under the age of 35. Despite investments in youth-focused opportunities, the unemployment rates remain alarmingly high with many young people trapped in a cycle of poverty. There is a pressing demand for comprehensive programs that empower young Ugandans to establish their own income-generating activities and prepare for a success career.

As an Economic Empowerment Advisor, you will support groups to improve their savings, develop small-scale businesses, and acquire skills that strengthen their employability. Working alongside community members, you will identify and launch income-generating activities, such as beekeeping and soap making, as well as jam and juice making.

Responsibilities

  • Mobilize new and existing community groups to identify and pursue sustainable, income-generating activities.
  • Plan and facilitate trainings on financial literacy and marketing topics.
  • Support groups to improve savings and access low-interest credit.
  • Boost agricultural productivity through environmental activities, such as irrigation, water harvesting, and tree planting.
  • You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as an after-school English club or a resume-writing workshop

Requirements

  • Experience with budgeting, marketing, financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and basic computer skills.
  • Experience designing and facilitating training for small groups.
